Fit and Lean

The quality of the trout produced for ChalkStream®️ is directly related to the quality of the water and the high flow rates of the farms.  Similar to terroir in wine, it is the pure chalk stream water that gives our fish a unique clean taste.

Slow grown over two years in fast flowing chalk stream water, our trout are raised in conditions as close to the wild trout of the Test and Itchen as it is possible to create, to produce an exceptionally lean well defined trout low in fat.

ChalkStream®️ trout are grown to high standards of welfare, food safety and environmental and ecological care.  For more information on the best practice certified standards we use see our sustainability page CLICK HERE

Fish Diet

The farms that supply ChalkStream®️ have worked for many years with the feed manufacturer Skretting to develop a high quality micro balanced diet. The food is a mixture of both marine and vegetable oils and proteins (the mix is approximately 30% marine vs 70% vegetable) with a higher protein content compared to oil to ensure we produce much leaner fish. The natural diet of river trout is fish and insects and fish protein is critical to the feed. All marine caught protein is sourced from IFFO approved sustainable fisheries and we have an ever increasing proportion coming directly from fish trimmings. All vegetable proteins come from GM free crops and pigment  from a naturally occurring bacteria approved for use in organic feeds. As we continue to evolve our trout diet we will be looking to include both insect meal and algal oil in the future.  For specific details about the sustainability of our feed please see SUSTAINABILITY

Welfare

ChalkStream®️ is a member of the RSPCA Assured scheme and only source from farms that are also RSPCA Assured. Following a report on trout welfare 2021, the farms have worked closely with the RSPCA to ensure all fish handling and harvesting procedures are maintained to the highest standards.

The RSPCA standards ensure all animals are reared, transported and slaughtered under higher welfare conditions and have everything required for a better life. For more details about the scheme click here RSPCA Assured.
